Sony's NGP

by Bandit 6 Comments

Last night, in Japan, Sony began showing off it's psp successor.  It is dubbed the Next Generation Portable, or NGP, and Sony boasts it as being as powerful as a ps3.

It is one sleek device with many features worth touting.  Yes it has dual analog sticks, yes it has touch controls, front and back, and yes the graphics are amazing, but there is even more.

The physical game media will be stored on a proprietary flash based memory unit capable of storing not only the game itself, but the game save data and DLC.  This is one of the biggest changes from the psp to the NGP as it will save the much needed battery life and internal memory won't be used as much.  Also the games will load considerably faster.

It has tilt-sensitive SIXAXIS controls, front and rear facing cameras, built in Wi-fi N, Blue Tooth, 3G, and full GPS capabilities.  *3G data plans/prices have yet to be revealed if at all.

The screen is a multi-touch sensitive OLED screen that is a little larger than the current psp.

Here are the full specs:

  • CPU: ARM® Cortex™-A9 core (4 core)
  • GPU: SGX543MP4+
  • External Dimensions: Approx. 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (width x height x depth) (tentative, excludes largest projection)
  • Rear touch pad: Multi touch pad (capacitive type)
  • Cameras: Front camera, Rear camera
  • Sound: Built-in stereo speakers, Built-in microphone
  • Sensors: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), Three-axis electronic compass
  • Location: Built-in GPS, Wi-Fi location service support
  • Keys / Switches: PS button, Power button, Directional buttons (Up/Down/Right/Left), Action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square), Shoulder buttons (Right/Left), Right stick, Left stick, START button, SELECT button, Volume buttons
  • Wireless communications: Mobile network connectivity (3G), IEEE 802.11b/g/n (n = 1x1)(Wi-Fi) (Infrastructure mode/Ad-hoc mode), Bluetooth® 2.1+EDR ?A2DP/AVRCP/HSP)

Sweet. With touch controls on the front and back, how would you hold it?

Well... I've seen pics from the sony briefing where it appeared the psp2 floats and you just kinda touch it. Maybe that's how? Kidding aside I think the touch part is in the middle and you hold the gripy part on the side.

This looks like something I would totally buy, but with the 3DS already being $250 I can only imagine the NGP will be astronomical, not to mention that the games will probably be considerably more expensive. At least it's backwords compatable with the ps2 and ps1 games on the ps store.

They might do subsidized pricing with the cell carrier... unless they are doing free 3g. Hmmm...

Well there you go the rear picture shows exactly how you hold it. There are little indentions to put your fingers until you want to... touch it. The touchy portion is larger than I thought. Reviews from the guys at Kotaku say that it is comfortable to hold and lighter than they thought.
